Christian Yoga: A Relationship with God Is Not a Formula

A Relationship with God Is Not a Formula: Christian Yoga for Making Space

It’s easy to treat a relationship with God like a formula.

If I pray the right way…
If I slow down enough…
If I say the right words or feel the right things…

Then maybe God will respond.

But a relationship with God is not something we figure out or unlock. It’s not something we earn or achieve. God is already here. Already present. Already speaking.

And what I’ve come to learn through Christian yoga is this: the goal is not to make something happen. It’s to make space to become more aware of what God is already doing.

God Is Already Speaking

There’s a moment in Genesis that has always stayed with me.

After Jacob has a dream of a ladder reaching to heaven, he wakes up and says:

“Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” (Genesis 28:16)

God didn’t suddenly show up.

God was already there.

Jacob just became aware.

That’s what happens so often in our lives. Not that God is absent, but that we are distracted. Not that God is silent, but that we are too busy, too overwhelmed, or too disconnected to notice.

Christian yoga doesn’t make God speak.

It helps us listen.

Yoga as a Space Maker

When we step onto the mat, we’re not summoning God.

We’re making space.

Space to slow down.
Space to breathe.
Space to feel what we’ve been avoiding.
Space to become aware of what’s already true.

The postures, the breath, and the stillness aren’t magic. They don’t create God’s presence.

They help us recognize it.

They help us settle enough to notice what God has already been doing, already been saying, already been offering.

Receiving What God Is Already Giving

So often, we come into prayer thinking we need to bring something.

The right words.
The right mindset.
The right level of focus.

But what if the invitation is not to bring something, but to receive something?

Time on the mat becomes a space where we can begin to name what is actually going on:

What am I feeling?
What is weighing on me?
What do I truly need right now?

And as we name those things honestly, we begin to recognize something deeper:

God is the one who provides what we need.

Peace.
Comfort.
Wisdom.
Rest.
Presence.

Not because we earned it.
Not because we finally got it right.

But because God is already giving it.

Cutting Through the Noise

We live in a world that constantly tells us what we need.

Scroll long enough and you’ll find it:
You need this product.
This solution.
This upgrade.
This version of yourself.

It’s endless.

And over time, it gets hard to tell the difference between what we’ve been told to want and what we actually need.

That’s where slowing down matters.

When we breathe.
When we move.
When we sit in stillness.

We begin to feel what’s underneath the noise.

Sometimes it’s anxiety.
Sometimes it’s grief.
Sometimes it’s exhaustion.
Sometimes it’s a quiet longing we haven’t named in a long time.

And in that honesty, we make space for the Holy Spirit to meet us not in theory, but in reality.

Awareness That Carries Off the Mat

One of the most important things I’ve learned is that what happens on the mat doesn’t stay there.

Sometimes, you’ll have a powerful moment while you’re practicing. A sense of peace. A realization. A clear prayer.

But sometimes… nothing obvious happens.

You move. You breathe. You finish. And it feels ordinary.

And yet something is still happening under the surface. Often unseen and unfelt right away.

But later that day, or the next day, or even a week later:

A conversation lands differently.
A song speaks right into what you needed.
A Scripture suddenly feels alive.
A thought comes that you hadn’t considered before.

And you realize…you were being prepared.

The space you made on the mat allowed you to receive what God was already giving, just not in the moment you expected.

An Invitation to Practice Differently

So what if you approached your next time on the mat differently?

Not as a way to achieve something.
Not as a way to get somewhere.
Not as a way to make something happen.

But as a space to become aware.

Aware of your body.
Aware of your breath.
Aware of your heart.
Aware of God’s presence.

You don’t have to force anything.

You don’t have to manufacture a spiritual experience.

You don’t have to earn God’s attention.

God is already here.
God is already speaking.
God’s face is already turned toward you.

Your practice is simply an invitation to notice.

To receive.

To become aware.

And sometimes, like Jacob, you may find yourself saying:

“Surely the Lord is in this place… and I was not aware of it.”

Make Space to Be with God

If this resonates, take a few minutes to step onto your mat. Our Christian yoga classes are designed to help you slow down, breathe, and become more aware of God’s presence already with you. Nothing to achieve. Nothing to earn. Just space to notice and receive.
