What do you do when you are in the middle of a practice, especially one that is being filmed, and your body just doesn’t have a posture in it that day?
I remember sitting there thinking…”Crap. I can’t forward fold.” I don’t know what was going on in my back and legs that day, but I just didn’t have a fold in me.
What do you do then?
After a moment of panic, I simply folded where I could that day. It was a slight fold, and I needed lots of props so that I could truly rest in the posture, but I went where I could. And I realized that had to be good enough for that day and that class.
I share this with you for two reasons:
One – It’s ok to not be where you want to be on a particular day. In a practice or even in life. Honor where you are. Listen well to where you are and why you might be there. Find peace in it and realize God is with you right there.
Two – For those who teach yoga, or have influence over anybody for any reason, it’s ok to show that you aren’t perfect. It’s a good thing when you are off your game and show yourself patience and kindness. I know that sounds weird but people need to know we are all human. We all have good days and difficult days. Honoring where you are and allowing others to see that is a beautiful invitation for them to know they can honor where they are.
So wherever you are today friend, may you honor that place. Thank God for this beautiful day. Listen well and be kind and patient with yourself. The deeper fold will come when it’s meant to.
