The dominance of fear in our culture and churches may be one of the most difficult, and important, issues facing us today. Learning to name our fear and overcome it is one of our most important tasks.

In a recent podcast episode, I interviewed Dan White, the author of the book Love Over Fear. In our conversation, we explore what fear is, the root of fear, how fear affects us, and ultimately how we can begin to overcome fear in our own lives so that love can reign. During our conversation, Dan shared one of his personal practices for engaging and overcoming fear.

The following simple yet effective practice is adapted (with Dan’s permission) from our discussion and can be practiced no matter who you are, what you do, or how much time you have. It is meant to help us name our fears, bring those things that might be controlling us underneath the surface to our consciousness, and help us invite the Holy Spirit to renew love and life.

We encourage you to practice this discipline at least once a week for however much time you can dedicate to it. We also encourage you to have a journal with you if that is helpful for expressing your thoughts and feelings, as well as acting as a means for exploring your fears, responses, and the work of the Holy Spirit over time.

Love Over Fear Practice

-Find a space where you can enter into silence without distraction.

-Focus on your breath and ask God to open your heart, mind, body, and Spirit to God’s presence and voice in this moment.

-Ask yourself 3 questions: (Write down your responses to these questions if that is helpful.)

  1. Where do I feel inadequate?
  2. Where do I feel angry and what am I angry about?
  3. Where do I feel fear and what am I afraid of?

-Meditate/Reflect on who you are, your true identity, in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

These verses may be helpful: Genesis 1:27, 1 John 3:1-3, Psalm 139:13-14, Ephesians 2:10, Psalm 8.

-Bring your responses to the 3 questions above to God in prayer in light of who you truly are in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. What might God be saying to you concerning your inadequacies, anger, and fear? What truth is God sharing and how does this challenge and/or encourage you?

-Close with the Lord’s Prayer or any prayer/words that connect with you.
